RUGBY WORLD CUP'S IMPACT ON HOTEL PERFORMANCE - WEEK 3
Newcastle and Leicester were the strongest performing locations during the third week of the Rugby World Cup 2015, with revenue per available room rising 218.0% and 214.2%, respectively on 9 October and 4 October.

The analysis of the first three weeks shows that on several occasions hotels were able to raise RevPAR considerably. Increases were greater than 100%, especially during matches involving Fiji, Scotland, England, Australia, Wales, New Zealand and Tonga. In addition, hotels experienced RevPAR increases of more than 200% during the following matches: Wales against Fiji on 1 October; New Zealand against Georgia on 2 October; Argentina against Tonga on 4 October; and Tonga against New Zealand on 9 October.
- Newcastle: Hotels in Newcastle were the top performers for the third week of the Rugby World Cup. On 9 October, RevPAR increased 218.0% to £143.47, driven by a 145.5% increase in ADR, while occupancy grew 22.6% to 98.6%. The match between New Zealand and Tonga ended 47-9.
- Leicester: Hotels in Leicester experienced strong growth on 4 October, when Argentina beat Tonga 45-16. Conversely to Newcastle, it was occupancy that drove performance, growing 105.5% to 74.9%. ADR rose 52.9% to £72.47. However, the corresponding Sunday recorded the lowest occupancy level during the whole month of October in 2014..
- Olympic Park: Hotels in Stratford, Barking and Ilford saw RevPAR growth of 70.1% on 4 October, driven by a 46.7% increase in ADR when Ireland beat Italy 16-9. However, on 7 October when South Africa played against the United States, hotel performance was more modest (RevPAR rose 16.4%) due to strong growth during the same day in 2014.
- Twickenham: The Australia-Wales game held on Saturday, 10 October helped hotels’ RevPAR grow 56.6% to £98.55, driven by ADR (+59.8%). Despite the event attracting the highest attendance for the stadium so far (almost 81,000 attendees), occupancy for hotels within 5 kilometres from the stadium recorded negative performance, suggesting that most of the visits were day visits.
