SINGAPORE—STR, the leader in global hospitality benchmarking, has commenced providing the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) with comprehensive hotel industry data covering the key performance metrics in major countries and cities around the world.
“We are delighted to deliver reliable and necessary data to the JNTO in support of the thriving Japanese lodging and tourism sector,” said Jesper Palmqvist, STR’s area director for Asia Pacific. “By furnishing our proprietary data intelligence, which is trusted by governments, industry stakeholders and the academic community around the world, we believe STR will play a significant role in assisting decision makers in Japan and beyond.”
STR’s services will empower stakeholders in Japan to strategize for an inbound travel market expansion based on objective and visualized data as well as analysis of tourism seasonality at the global level and benchmarking of the world’s major markets. Users can leverage historical data trends to formulate an appropriate promotional strategy and best practices, especially for major events such as the Rugby World Cup 2019 and 2020 Summer Olympics.
Properties that contribute to the STR accommodation survey under a non-disclosure agreement are provided with a complimentary digital report that outlines position against the different types of market segments.
STR’s most recent data for the 12 months ending with April 2019 showed a 0.6% year-over-year decrease in Japan’s occupancy levels (83.5%) due to supply growth in major cities such as Osaka and Kyoto. Average daily rate for the same April year-to-date time period was up (+2.1% to JPY15,173.01), leading to revenue per available room that was 1.5% higher (JPY12,675.94) than the previous 12 months. Demand growth in the country was largely driven by international travelers.
STR’s data sample in the hotel industry comprises more than 64,000 hotels and 8.7 million hotel rooms around the world. More than 4,000 hotels in Japan are already included in that sample.
