Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA) - Academic

The Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics, offered jointly by STR and the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute, is the leading certification in hotel analytics. Recognition provides evidence of a thorough knowledge of the foundational metrics, definitions, formulas, and methodologies that are used by the hotel industry. Having the designation demonstrates an ability to analyze various types of hotel industry data and to make strategic inferences based upon that analysis. Certification also confirms a comprehensive understanding of benchmarking and performance reports that are used by the lodging industry. The CHIA certification has been received by over 20,000 students, professors, and industry professionals. It has been endorsed by the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the Institute of Hospitality, the International Council of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education, and the Pacific Asia Travel Association.

The CHIA certification is US$95, including one free retake if not successful on the first attempt. Financial need-based scholarships are available. A discounted rate is also available for emerging nations. The exam is 50 questions – multiple choice, with a 90-minute time limit.  A minimum score of 70% is needed to pass the exam.

Instructors that would like to offer the CHIA certificate training to students at their school can attend an in-person or virtual train-the-trainer workshop to learn the material and discuss how the training can be integrated into their program. Comprehensive training materials are available including PowerPoints, quiz questions, case scenarios, application exercises and supporting data. Upon completing the training, an instructor may also take the exam at no cost. Once they have offered the training and exam to their students, they will receive their CHIA Authorized Instructor certificate.
